It’s Raining In The House Again
It’s August and the leaves are beginning their seasonal change. While we were away at camp we had one chilly night where the temperatures dipped into the 40 degree range and that’s all it takes to kick off what New England is known for, the fall foliage. Autumn is my favorite season and I will go all out decorating for it at home. This year is more difficult than last for a number of reasons, the biggest being the decayed state of the building we rent in.
Not long ago we had a heavy rainstorm that sent my husband and I scrambling outside in the deluge with a ladder to get up on the roof as water made its way indoors again through the old wooden siding. It turned out the gutter was clogged and water was backed up but we managed to get most of the blockage out. We are too old to be doing patchy roof repairs not to mention it’s not our responsibility, but if we don’t do it the water flows into our apartment. August through September is normally a dry season. We are in hopes we will get a couple months reprieve before the snow and ice roof raking begin in winter.
The vegetable and flower garden are history now, but we do enjoy seeing the bunnies and birds in the yard. I normally set up a feeder outdoors that I can get photos from various vantage points without scaring everything away. I’m officially that weird old lady watching the birds with camera in hand. The one large bird I always enjoy photographing is this Pileated Woodpecker. For years he, his mate, and returning offspring have shredded an old birch tree in the yard to the point it needs to be torn down. So far it’s still standing but large branches drop off, often close to our cars if we get any kind of wind or storm.
The week after we returned from our camp vacation was uneventful as we physically and mentally unpacked. I very much enjoyed that time away together as did my husband. Our intention was to spend the return week house hunting but we heard nothing. We did manage to see one property we had found and put an offer on it but we were too late. We were supposed to see it days sooner but like clockwork our realtor canceled and we went 3 days too late, the house was sold that day. After that we never heard a word from either realtor. It’s an ongoing problem and I’m questioning what the heck a realtor gets a commission for if the client is doing all of the work finding and contacting properties. The realtors are not helping our situation at all, they are hindering us finding anything. With that said I’ll change the subject.
It’s awkward not working but I am adjusting somewhat, I’m hoping to work from home as I’ve done before. I’m also not used to not being alone at home during the day. My son is busy doing what he needs to and leaves for work when my husband is on his way home from his job. I’m one who likes having my time alone, no family, no friends, just me myself and I. I have a feeling that is a thing of the past and not returning anytime soon. It works for the most part but I agree adult children need to live lives of their own on their own. The high rent costs will never come down I’m afraid, and many we know are struggling living in their vehicles or at campgrounds until those close in September.
Speaking of homes, I often pass by a neighbors yard and on a walk took a photo of their flower gardens. The photo doesn’t do it justice. Every early August the front yard is full of every flowering bush I have ever seen and it’s obvious it was planned carefully. Blooms of color overlap the one next to it and her yard is one big festive rainbow complete with a white picket fence as its frame. Fingers crossed next year we can find a home to do the same as we both love gardening.
Are you ready for the holidays? I’m not and I don’t like them. The holiday season just makes me sad. Visiting the local Hobby Lobby in July the store had not just fall decor but also everything Christmas on full display, my festiveness stops at Halloween thank you. I can’t take my husband into a store and expect him to behave. If there’s a way to make someone giggle he will find a way. If he can’t find his own audience he will jump scare and photo-bomb me all through our day. You will lose your filters as you grow old and he is a poster boy for that fact.
Are you a Pumpkin Spice fan?, I’ve never heard of Cheerios that flavor but there they are. I don’t mind traditional pumpkin pie but I stop there. Has it always been this way?, stores throwing all the upcoming holiday merchandise 4-5 months early? I don’t remember it happening in the 1980’s when my children were school age. I don’t know about anyone else but seeing it all months prior gives me holiday burnout when the actual holiday arrives.
I can’t wait to go back to the camp on the lake the end of September. My plan is to fill my two cameras with photos of autumn foliage both there and in the mountains. I’ve never had the opportunity, and we will also take the canoe out. Have you ever left on a vacation and thought about staying gone forever?, well that’s my current mood looking at the chart below of homes for sale. I'm keeping my fingers crossed we find somewhere to live, sooner than later.
