I Could Have Lost Him
The last I blogged we were in the final stages of buying a home we had decided on, then it all went south from there.
First, it was the back and forth about repairs being needed with the seller, then more complications popped up not of our doing. Home buying is rarely a one and done experience and ours was a cautionary tale in the end. We did not go through with the closing, backed out, and what followed made us thank our lucky stars. Had we been in the middle of a move to another state it might have been a deadly outcome.I will get right to the point. My husband had been on vacation and one morning after being up he suddenly got the cold sweats and felt tired. Me thinking it could be his blood sugar, I ushered him to bed to lie down and gave him some juice. After a few minutes he seemed better and we thought, okay that's that. Nope. He had made his way back to his armchair but then it began again, only this time he felt nauseated and like vomiting. I said to us both "that's it we are going to the hospital right now." He protested mumbling it might be a bug, but instinct told me something was very off and we went.
Once in the emergency room he still was looking more unwell and after triage we were ushered through to an exam room. My husband is a robust active 69 with no history of medical conditions. In the past he'd had some dizzy spells that would happen at work and months ago we had found him semi-conscious in his armchair at home, yet nobody had answers when he'd seen doctors and had tests. That all changed in this visit, he had an angel nearby or maybe his dad was looking down on him. As he laid there on the bed the nurse was speaking to him and he stopped responding. She said his name, looking at him. His eyes were open but drooped and blank. The next thing I knew she yelled a code while pushing an alarm switch, “His heart rate has dropped to 20!” I backed out of the room in shock as medical staff rushed in and I watched them bring him around from the hallway. He was diagnosed with Bradycardia that afternoon and admitted to the ICU immediately. The next day they performed surgery and a Pacemaker was installed.
It’s an experience that has changed both my husband and myself profoundly. It certainly has put everything in life for us in a whole different perspective. He could have passed away that day, or any day. The Bradycardia had been going on years, and it explained a lot. We were so lucky it happened where and when it did and it was finally caught. He’s home now recovering and will return back to work on light duty for four weeks. The main thing is he is feeling better and is still here. Every day of life we wake up is a blessing and I thank God we were in the right place at the right time that day.
