New England's Winter Is Like That Ex That Won't Leave

Easter was a wet rainy outdoor washout, but children weren't deterred in their soggy egg hunting. It feels more like February than April. We are on our 7th month of cold weather here in the northeast and recently had a quick one-day snowstorm that melted. If you Google search online regarding winter in New England, the 2026 memes and snarky YouTube videos created by residents to be found are plentiful.

Because he insists, my husband did the cooking and served us a chicken dinner with roasted vegetables. As always, he did an excellent job and the added heat of the oven from hours of baking kept us warm in the dreary weather. Years ago, when we were younger it was myself that did holiday cooking and he would help, I'm not sure how we got turned around so he does it.  He certainly enjoys doing it, me not so much anymore. In the last month or two I've entered an odd stage where I'm just not wanting to cook at all, but I do.

Our Easter was low-key and just the three of us. Never in my wildest dreams did I think last September it would be so cold so long and here we are. How's the house hunting going? It's moving at a snail's pace is all I can say. Everything is overpriced or a mobile home that's in a park. Given many of the area mobile homes this winter battled frozen pipes it's the last thing we need to buy. The two mortgage lenders we have lined up don't want anything to do with parks or mobile homes, they will allow one on its own private lot but not without strict guidelines. Our problem of a realtor taking us seriously is still an ongoing hindrance.

We haven't been paying much attention to online social sites nor the television due to the world going nuts, we do just the opposite, we read or watch old movies. The price of gas (petrol) is the daily giveaway as to what's going on in politics, another subject I totally avoid. The heating fuel cost is climbing weekly, with the extended cold weather not doing us any favors. Spring is at least still progressing; we have tree buds and flowers popping up with pollen season soon to follow.

I'm much overdue for a day of grabbing my camera and disappearing into a forest void of calm, beauty, and quiet. Somehow looking through the viewfinder eases my anxiety and centers me. It's nothing to do with proving my skills and more about being in the moment with focus, and it's a healthy distraction.

There's so much more to life than the day-to-day grind and world conflicts filling the air. Now in my 60's I can easily say from life experience we humans are what's wrong with this planet and I choose to avoid them as a rule. Thinking back on my younger years I remember meeting "old people" who sound like me, now I am one of them.

My birds make me smile. Over the winter I had to remove the feeders for the first time in years because we had a squirrel in the attic. Yes, I know they do damage, we have been here 16 years and it's nothing new. The tenant upstairs was the brunt of the attic noise, and it unnerved him. Now that spring has sprung my feeders are out with the birds returning very slowly. Having no pets the last two years still has left a little hole in my heart, but that too will fade. The wintering attic intruder has since moved out into the wild, and his entrance back in was blocked.

I've not been very attentive to my online accounts including this personal blog. If life ever settles, it's always my goal to write more frequently. When I was working and more out there in the world there was more to share. Now that I'm in slow down mode since being laid off, I struggle to find new events to jot down. Life is pretty predictable and what should I share weekly, grocery shopping (humor)? Hence, I go a bit longer intervals between blog posts.

As the snow and cold fade away and with summers eventual return, life will be sweeter and get busier. We will get out more and I can create more content. For now, I need to have my Metamucil morning cocktail and put my face back into my laptop searching through property listings from here to Maine for a new home.
